The Land of Pollo Campero
Jing and I have survived our first night in the lovely home of Patricias, a home for travellers cerca de aeropeurto in ciudad de guatemala. For only $21 you get a lift from the airport to what is the guate version of a bed and breakfast in estados unidos meets european hostel: private room pero el bano publico and warm desayuna of fruit and toast con jam. Coffee in guate is disappointedly....instant. In the pais de finca del cafe, one would think that coffee would be excellent. Pero no. Apparently it's because of the higher market value it fetches in other pais por ejamplo estados unidos.
The room was nice with a full bed, mirror, and cuatro pareds y un suelo. No mas grande but did its job. The next morning we woke at seis horas to shower y be ready for our cuatro hora viajar de ciudad de guate a Xela. Ppl told us the busses were second mano greyhounds from the EeUu and they were correcto! Little did we know, todas cosas in guate is second hand: clothes, cars, books, computers, etc. New is a relative concept.
The ride to Xela esta muy bonita! I hate to say it but wild and wonderful just found a new home. The topography of guate is a sight to behold: montanas, campos, nubias, really skinny cows y stray perros. Workers sat on the edge of the road awaiting work, people cleaning up the rocks from the previous mud slide, mujeres and indigenous ppl adorning colorful traje carrying straw baskets on their cabezas dotted the landscape. Looking out the window and wondering what did we exactly get ourselves into made the four hour ride go by quickly. On the bus we met a lawyer learning spanish in guate to become an immigration abogada. How different it must all be from the bright lights of the city and center of western civilization to the mountainous and rural literally middle of the western hemisphere!
Per the title: We still haven't seen the Guate KFC yet. It's so good people apparently bring it back to the US. o.O
Beautiful Guate landscape from a-top El Chicabal. Looks a bit like West VA if you ask me. Wild and wonderful...
